I will send out some handy tips and useful exercises for adults learning to navigate and use the English language each week. Please feel free to share this newsletter with friends and colleagues.

It’s opening day for the 2024 Olympics in Paris! This should be an exciting year because the 2020 Olympics were overshadowed by a nasty virus named COVID-19. The Olympics will also be a nice distraction from the craziness of American politics—a chance to celebrate athletes around the world!

Reading Tip

Language Level – A2 – C1

Explore the official Olympics website. The reading level for this exercise is varied because you choose if you want to read about something, just look at pictures, or find the schedules for your favorite events. Also, the website is translated into many different languages for your use.

Listening Tip

Language Level – B2

Watch Simone Biles, an American rockstar, in a gymnastics event. Listen to the commentary. Rated at an upper level because the commentators are typical Americans who speak quickly, and since they are not on screen, you can’t read facial expressions.

Let’s Practice!

Combine the TWO sentences to ONE, using a relative pronoun.

  1. That is the man. I spoke to him yesterday.
  2. The restaurant has the best pizza in town. We usually eat there.
  3. The film is about a woman. Her daughter mysteriously disappears.
  4. The man was arrested yesterday. He escaped from prison a week ago.
  5. The Marybelle Hotel is opening up again soon. I stayed there before the pandemic.
  6. Mr. Black took over the company. His wife died last year.
  7. That’s the director. Her films are always successful.
  8. The exercise was very complicated. No one could do it.

Weekly Challenge

Language Level – B2

Proofread the two paragraphs below and correct the mistakes. There are five mistakes in each paragraph.

Mankind have been searching for the key to happiness since the beginning of time and if you ask the wise man at the top of the mountain, he will give you different answers depending on the moral lesson been taught at the time. Some will say the key to happiness is finding your purpose in life, other will tell you it is about relationships and anothers might say it is curiosity and wisdom itself that has bring fulfillment to you.

You may be the smartest person in the room, but how you present yourself at work can have a greater impact on your ability to leader. Your behavior can bolster my reputation as a leader or seal your fate as a person who is never given opportunities by advancement. Leaders in the workplace are employees that are productive, motivated, perform at high levels, and are people that others want to work with, encourage growth, show good judgment, and communicated well.
