New Year’s Traditions

Vocabulary

Let’s explore some vocabulary associated with celebrating the New Year in America:

  1. Auld Lang Syne – a popular song to be sung after the last stroke of midnight that bids farewell to the last year.
  2. Bubbly – A nickname for champagne and other sparkling alcohol.
  3. Fireworks – Explosions of light in the sky used to celebrate.
  4. Resolution – a promise you make to yourself for self-improvement in the new year.
  5. Tradition – Behaviors passed down within a group of people that hold symbolic meaning.
  6. Toast – People raise their glasses and drink together in honor of a person or event.
  7. Confetti – Small pieces of colored paper that are thrown into the air in celebration.
  8. Celebration – A social and enjoyable activity to mark a special event.
